Tough & Refined

The art–and eternal now–of putting two surprisingly unexpected things together roars to life in this fall’s Polo Originals collection, inspired by the golden era of Grand Prix car racing

The man in the photograph was dressed in a way that didn’t have any real precedent, not back then. It’s not that the different pieces he had on weren’t familiar; they were. The leather bomber, the denim jacket, the white workshirt worn with a tie—a silk knit yanked out of its predictable upper-crust context and, as a result, made all the more desirable.

AT THE WHEEL
Ralph Lauren and his Bentley Blower.
Cars, he’s said, can say as “much about you as your clothes do.”

Each element was a perfected example of its kind, rather than a newfangled take reworked for the sake of affecting some trend of the vanishing moment. Creating for the sake of creating clearly wasn’t the intention. These impulses are the drivers of modern fashion, not style. It’s why it comes and why it goes and why it is so often forgotten. The test of taste the man was interested in was greater, even harder—a test against time itself. The man, of course, was Ralph Lauren.

Many such images, collections, and ideas have followed that, again and again, impart subtle lessons in what might be called the canon of Polo style. No matter the subject (suits, socks, flannel shirts, pocket squares, cowboy boots), you notice the same sensibility weaving together seemingly incongruent things. For me, a few particularly key moments over the years come to mind. In a photo of two young athletes layered in rugby shirts, grey sweatpants, and black cleats on a muddy campus pitch, it was the heavy wool blazers they’re wearing, and how the jackets say that they’re more than jocks. “Cool,” I couldn’t help thinking. On what looks to be an architect in his sleek downtown studio, it was the bold plaid hunting flannel paired with a polka-dot silk scarf and double-breasted chalk-stripe suit. Again, I couldn’t help thinking: “cool.”

And then there was the cowboy in black tie and fur-collared great coat leading his horse through the snow. The look, in hindsight, didn’t just anticipate the frontier grandeur of Legends of the Fall or A River Runs Through It or, more recently, Yellowstone, it suggested, like the others do, an interesting life outside the frame. “Where exactly was this guy going in a smoking jacket and a pair of boots,” I wondered. Yet, just as easily, I could see the great lodge of roaring fireplaces, trimmed trees, wool blankets, and fascinating people in Polo waiting for him on the other side of the arroyo. “Cool,” I had to think again, because, as Fitzgerald wrote, “The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function.” These looks are the resulting vision of such a mind. They not only entertain two contradictory ideas—something fine with something rough; the wardrobe of the rugged outdoorsman with the wardrobe of the executive in a wood-paneled office; the world of manifest destiny with the world of dinner-party dress codes—they convincingly fuse them together.

It would be an oversimplification to assume there’s not more to Polo than the careful calibration of opposites that attract. Ralph has built out a physical world in such detail—men’s, women’s, children’s, stores, restaurants, coffee shops—that each year its realness spreads further into our own reality, making life a little more delightful with each visit. This piece is devoted to just one corner of the canvas—the fall collection of Polo Originals, each piece of which, whether a three-piece suit or a pair of paneled cords, has sewn into it the blue-and-silver label used from the very beginning. What Polo Originals inspires is the idea that a dream can lead to a life better lived. It does so through its feel for the moment and unerring eye for how to rework a classic by juxtaposing it with something surprising. By doing so, you see both in a new way.

“I have always loved contradiction and the unexpected,” Ralph once said, which is evident throughout the current lineup. Its inspiration comes from the early days of Grand Prix automobile racing, when engine mechanics, airplane designers, war heroes, and other thrill-seekers tried to go faster than any human had gone before, and looked particularly great doing it at tracks like the Goodwood Motor Circuit, where the collection was photographed.

As Fitzgerald wrote, “The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function.” These looks are the resulting vision of such a mind.

In the collection, the world of polished manners meets the muscle and metal of the auto garage once again. The result is the look of what became a new sort of man, one who might pair the toughness of oilcloth or leather made to protect the driver of a Monoposto at dial-cracking speeds with the tailored note of a tweed Polo coat—and maybe even an antique-stenciled shirt and foulard tie. Foulard tie? Yes. Don’t tell me you never wear a tie anymore. The less you wear one, the more important it is that you choose well when you do—and why not wear it with something … well ... a little unexpected?

Here, also, is not just tweed, but big tweed, a statement of what it means to embrace the moment boldly—even bespokely, as these are patterns, exclusive to Polo Originals, that have been woven by the same mills in England and Ireland which Polo has been working with since the very beginning. These aren’t the hushed designs of yore. They’re graphic statements of confidence and individuality. Take, for example, a three-piece suit in a large-scale cognac-and-camel Glen plaid, which is anything but precious.

Think of it the way you would a Swiss Army knife: When worn all together with a shirt and tie, a three-piece is one of the best-looking things a man can wear. But it can also be broken up so that any one of its pieces serves as the elegant detail that gives added dimension to something of less noble stuff—just the vest, for instance, with a pair of dinged-up cords, or just the trousers with a sweater you might have worn in college and a weathered leather jacket.

This sense of functional stylishness is something the collection as a whole reflects. Through the merest detail—the patches and pins, the shirt collars and scarves—it recalls the varied walks of life who once came together as great teams to redefine the limits of fast, and how these pioneering men—and what they wore—rubbed off on each other. The wardrobe of the guy born with money and means gained a touch of practical toughness; the clothes of purpose that hung in the mechanic’s closet had added to them the spit of polish. This season’s Polo Originals tells that story, and it does so, as always, against the clock.

The greatest of Grand Prix posters achieve the unimaginable feat of freezing a race car in motion. Through the decades, few artists have done it better than these, and though prices for their work are on the rise, it’s still a buyer’s market
