The Tuxedo Comes Undone

As the black-tie party ventures outside city limits, the evening essential finds new frontiers.

Ralph has always loved a woman in a tuxedo. Consider the countless times the designer and his wife, Ricky, have worn them together, so much so that the image has been immortalized on the Ralph and Ricky Polo Bear sweater. The only rule either of them have for black tie is to loosen it up. Ricky has always done the tuxedo her way. In an old photo, where Ralph sports a velvet ribbon tie, Ricky is wearing a white-tie ensemble with a waistcoat. In another, she has on a velvet dinner jacket with a black silk necktie and trousers tucked into cowboy boots. Both looks reflect a style philosophy that makes “formal” wear a bit more informal, relaxed, and personal. This holiday season, Polo harnesses that spirit to explore the many ways you can deconstruct the menswear evening staple for women, looking at each component of the tuxedo and its many accoutrements to find new, clever ways we might get dressed for a party, regardless of locale. The key ingredients—black jacket and trousers, white shirt—stay the same, but this year they might come with unbuttoned cuffs, errant collars, a layer of plaid, or cummerbund or sash. Where the traditional men’s dress code is often strict, the women’s tuxedo is a moveable feast.
